Aabar Investments, an investment fund that has the biggest stake in Mercedes-Benz, as spent $328 million for part of a Brazilian bank that was recently floated by Banco Santander, the Spanish financial giant.

This is another sign that is enough cash left over in the Gulf governments, despite the current economic woes. The announcement of the investment can one day after Qatar’s sovereign wealth fund announced it has boosted its stake in Songbird Estates PLC. Qatar Holding is now the biggest shareholder of the same company that owns Canary Wharf in east London.

Aabar’s chairman Khadem Al-Qubaisi, said that the company is delighted to invest in such a strong entity. They hope to strengthen the existing relationship with Banco Santander.

As Abu Dhabi’s most active investment fund, Aabar has also bought a 9.1 percent state in Daimler and almost a third of Virgin Galactic, which is a commercial space travel company. Aabar is controlled through a majority stake that is owned by the state-run International Petroleum Investment Company.

Many Abu Dhabi workers are commuting up to three hours in order to take advantage of lower rents. Jones Lang Lasalle has issued a new report that states that a two bed apartment found in Abu Dhabi is now about 40 percent more than one of the same size and type in Dhabi. Many of the workers are looking to live outside of Abu Dhabi because the rents are simply too high.

Discovery Gardens is becoming very popular with people who work in Abu Dhabi because the rents are so much cheaper. This is rather a reverse that Dubai saw in 2007. Many tenants moved to Sharjah because the rents were lower there in 2007-2008. Some of these tenants are now returning to Dubai and places such as International City. These are becoming more and more affordable due to a 30 percent decrease in rents in 2009.

Dubai Studio rents, such as in Jumeirah Lakes Towers, fell slightly in September from August, although many of the two and three bedroom villas and apartments saw no change. Many experts hope it’s the beginning of the end of the financial housing crisis that has griped Dubai in the past year.

In order to support the struggling government related companies, Dubai must raise an additional $10 billion. This is according to one of the leading analysts at Standard and Poor’s.

Right now, there is around $4 billion for that support says Farouk Soussa, who heads the Middle East government ratings at Standard and Poor’s. At the Dubai International Financial Center Economic Conference, he said that this was simply insufficient. At the worst of the world’s financial crisis, the United Arab Emirates central bank out of Abu Dhabi underwrote the first half of a 20 billion bond program that was created to bail out the struggling economy.

It is expected that the UAE central bank will once again step in to help. If not, then the help may come from the Abu Dhabi government. Some analysts think that Dubai will be able to raise the money by November.

Part of the financial crisis has been the falling real estate prices, with many areas seeing a 50% reduction in property values. However, there is also $50 billion in debt that will be due in the next three years. For the present time, it’s uncertain how Dubai will work to repay this debt.
